Fine hair needs different care than thick, dry curls. But sometimes needs also vary within the same hair type: roots may get greasy quickly while the ends are dry. Or the scalp may be sensitive even though the lengths need rich conditioning.
Innersense Organic Beauty offers a wide selection of shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and styling products for these different needs. The products that work best depend not only on whether your hair is straight, wavy, or curly. Hair thickness, moisture needs, and scalp condition also play an important role.
In this guide, we explain the differences between Innersense products, show useful combinations, and share tips for using them correctly.
New to Innersense or looking to adjust your current routine? This overview will help you make your first choice.
The combinations mentioned are a starting point. You don't necessarily have to use shampoo and conditioner from the same line. An individual combination may be a better choice, especially when your scalp and lengths have different needs.
Innersense Organic Beauty was founded by hair professionals Greg and Joanne Starkman. The brand combines professional hair care with carefully selected plant-based ingredients and concentrated formulas.
The shampoos, which Innersense calls Hairbaths, cleanse without sulfates. The brand also avoids silicones and synthetic fragrances. Instead, it uses plant oils, extracts, proteins, and selected conditioning ingredients, among others.
The range includes lightweight formulas for fine hair and rich care for dry, thick curls. It also features targeted products for sensitive scalps, color-treated hair, and different styling preferences.
One special feature is how the concentrated formulas are used. Innersense recommends starting with a small amount of product, distributing it between your palms, and applying it to thoroughly soaked hair. We explain the best way to do this below.
Innersense offers six Hairbaths with different benefits. When choosing one, focus above all on the cleansing intensity, your hair’s care needs, and the condition of your scalp.
Fine hair quickly loses volume when shampoo and conditioner are too rich. The Pure Harmony Hairbath cleanses thoroughly and leaves hair feeling light and cared for.
The formula is especially suitable for fine to normal hair that needs more fullness and movement without being weighed down by intensive care.
Suitable for: Fine to normal hair, low volume, and anyone looking for a light, thorough cleanse.
Those with fine hair and dry ends can pair Pure Harmony with a slightly richer conditioner. This keeps the cleansing light while giving the lengths more care.
The Color Awakening Hairbath combines gentle cleansing with moisturizing care. It was developed especially for normal to slightly dry hair, as well as colored or chemically treated hair.
Compared with Pure Harmony, it focuses more on smoothness and moisture. At the same time, the formula helps maintain beautiful color vibrancy.
Suitable for: Normal to slightly dry hair, colored hair, and lengths that need extra moisture.
By the way, uncolored hair can also benefit from Color Awakening. What matters is how much care the hair needs.
The Hydrating Cream Hairbath is the richest option among the three classic Hairbaths.
The creamy formula was developed for thick, coarse, naturally dry, and damaged hair. It cleanses gently and helps make hair smoother. Strong curls, which are often prone to dryness and frizz, also benefit from this more intensive care.
Suitable for: Thick, dry, coarse, or damaged hair, as well as strong, care-needy curls.
Very fine hair usually doesn’t need this level of care. Pure Harmony or Color Awakening are often better choices.
The Clarity Hairbath differs from the other Innersense shampoos mainly because of its fragrance-free, hypoallergenic formula.
It contains no added fragrance or essential oils and cleanses especially gently. This makes it suitable for sensitive scalps and different hair types, including very fine hair.
Suitable for: Sensitive scalps, fragrance sensitivity, and all hair types that need especially gentle cleansing.
If your scalp is sensitive but your hair lengths are dry and thick, Clarity Hairbath can be paired with a richer conditioner.
The Hair Renew Scalp Hairbath focuses on the scalp.
The shampoo gently cleanses, removes excess sebum and buildup, and supports a balanced scalp. It is especially suitable for dryness and visible flaking.
Suitable for: Dry, imbalanced, or flaky scalps.
Unlike Clarity, Hair Renew is not a fragrance-free specialty treatment. While Clarity focuses on exceptional gentleness and avoiding added fragrance, Hair Renew focuses on caring for a dry or imbalanced scalp.
The Bright Balance Hairbath is a pigmented shampoo for blonde, bleached, and gray hair.
Violet pigments help balance unwanted yellow and warm tones. At the same time, the shampoo gently cleanses and helps moisturize.
Suitable for: Blonde, bleached, and gray hair where unwanted warm tones need to be neutralized.
Bright Balance is intended as a complementary color-care product. Innersense recommends using it about once a week. For other hair washes, choose a Hairbath suited to your hair type and care needs.
While shampoo cleanses the hair and scalp, conditioner makes hair easier to comb, softer, and more manageable. Hair thickness plays an important role here: fine hair often does better with lighter textures, while thick and dry hair usually needs more conditioning.
Lightweight care for fine to normal hair. Detangles, moisturizes, and adds softness and shine without unnecessarily weighing hair down. Ideal when you want to maintain volume.
For normal to slightly dry, color-treated, or chemically treated hair. Provides a little more nourishing care, improves combability, and helps maintain color vibrancy.
The rich choice for thick, coarse, dry, and damaged hair. Deeply nourishes the lengths, smooths frizz, and leaves hair softer and easier to comb.
Fragrance-free, hypoallergenic hydration for sensitive scalps and different hair textures. Colloidal oat supports soothing care. Also suitable for fine hair.
Combines conditioner with scalp care. Hydrates, cares for a dry scalp, and improves the softness of the hair lengths.
Pigmented care for blonde, bleached, and gray hair. Violet pigments help balance warm tones, while the formula adds moisture and shine. Innersense recommends using it once a week.
Yes, and it can actually make a lot of sense.
One example is fine hair with dry ends. Pure Harmony cleanses lightly yet thoroughly, while Color Radiance Conditioner gives the lengths extra care.
For a sensitive scalp and thick, dry hair, Clarity Hairbath can also be paired with Hydrating Cream Conditioner.
Choose your shampoo primarily based on your scalp, and your conditioner based on the thickness and care needs of your hair lengths.
The right combination doesn’t have to be complicated. Often, a well-matched shampoo and conditioner are enough. If needed, you can add a mask, leave-in treatment, or styling product.
Fine hair usually benefits from lightweight care that adds softness without sacrificing volume.
Our recommendation:
Cleansing: Pure Harmony Hairbath
Conditioning: Pure Inspiration Daily Conditioner
Optional styling: I Create Lift for more root volume and fullness.
Apply conditioner mainly to the lengths and ends. This keeps the roots light while still making the hair easy to comb.
If your roots feel balanced but the ends seem dry, you don’t necessarily need a particularly rich shampoo. Often, it’s enough to intensify care through the lengths.
Our recommendation:
Cleansing: Color Awakening Hairbath
Conditioning: Color Radiance Daily Conditioner
If needed: Sweet Spirit Leave-in Conditioner for extra moisture and easier detangling.
Distribute the conditioner carefully through the lengths. If the ends still feel brittle after drying, a small amount of leave-in treatment can help.
Thick hair can often take more conditioning. If it feels rough, is difficult to detangle, or tends to frizz, richer formulas are a good starting point.
Our recommendation:
Cleansing: Hydrating Cream Hairbath
Conditioning: Hydrating Cream Conditioner
Intensive conditioning: Hydrating Hair Mask
The hair mask supplements your regular care when your hair feels especially dry or brittle. It isn’t necessary with every wash.
For waves and curls, hair thickness is often more important than the curl pattern alone.
Fine waves usually need lighter conditioning to maintain their bounce. Thick, dry curls, on the other hand, can benefit from richer formulas.
For fine waves: Pure Harmony Hairbath and Pure Inspiration Daily Conditioner.
For thick, dry curls: Hydrating Cream Hairbath and Hydrating Cream Conditioner.
When styling, it comes down to the desired hold. Quiet Calm Curl Control conditions, defines curls, and reduces frizz without providing strong hold. I Create Hold, on the other hand, provides more pronounced definition and long-lasting hold.
The products can also be combined: first apply a conditioning curl cream, then a gel for extra hold. For fine hair, using less product is usually better.
Color-treated hair needs care that maintains its softness and supports color vibrancy.
Our recommendation:
Cleansing: Color Awakening Hairbath
Conditioning: Color Radiance Daily Conditioner
For blonde or gray hair with unwanted warm tones, Bright Balance Hairbath and Conditioner can be used as a complement about once a week.
If the hair is severely damaged by bleaching, the Repair Hair Mask may also be beneficial. The choice between moisture and repair depends on the condition of the hair structure.
Here, it’s worth considering cleansing and conditioning separately.
For a sensitive scalp, the fragrance-free Clarity products are a good starting point. If the lengths need more conditioning, you can also pair Clarity Hairbath with a richer conditioner.
For roots that get oily quickly and dry ends, Pure Harmony Hairbath can provide a gentle, thorough cleanse. Depending on hair thickness, Color Radiance or Hydrating Cream Conditioner is suitable for the lengths.
It’s important not to automatically apply rich treatments all the way to the roots. Often, it’s enough to focus on the lengths and ends.
Most Innersense products are suitable for the Curly Girl Method (CGM). The hair care range is free from sulfates and silicones and offers many products for caring for and defining curls and waves.
However, a few styling products don’t meet the strict CGM rules, for example because they contain denatured alcohol or waxes. If you follow the method consistently, you should therefore check the ingredients of each product.
Not every hair type needs a hair mask in addition to conditioner. Treatments are especially useful when your regular hair care isn’t enough or you want to address a specific hair concern.
Innersense focuses on three different approaches: deep cleansing, hydration, and repair.
The Detox Hair Mask cleanses the hair and scalp with activated charcoal, kaolin, and vinegar. It helps remove excess oil, styling residue, and mineral buildup.
This is useful when hair looks dull or feels heavy despite regular washing, styling products build up, or curls lose their bounce.
The Detox Hair Mask is applied before shampooing. It isn’t a traditional moisturizing mask, but is primarily designed to clarify.
The Hydrating Hair Mask deeply nourishes dry lengths with conditioning oils and moisture.
It’s suitable for hair that feels brittle, is difficult to detangle, or needs more softness. Thick, dry curls can also benefit from this intensive treatment.
The Repair Hair Mask targets damaged hair.
Its bonding formula with hydrolyzed moringa protein supports hair resilience and helps reduce breakage and visible damage.
It is especially useful for chemically treated, frequently heat-styled, or brittle hair.
The Overnight Repair Serum complements care for damaged lengths and ends.
Unlike a hair mask, it stays in the hair and can be used both overnight and during the day. The lightweight formula helps smooth frizz and make hair softer and more manageable.
In short: If your hair feels coated and heavy, Detox may help. For dryness, Hydrating is the priority. If your hair is damaged or brittle, Repair is the more targeted choice.
The scalp should also be considered when choosing hair care. Depending on whether it is sensitive, dry, or affected by residue, different products may be suitable.
The fragrance-free Clarity line is a good place to start. Hairbath and Conditioner contain no added fragrances or essential oils and are formulated for especially gentle care.
Hair Renew Scalp Hairbath and Hair Renew Soothing Conditioner combine hair cleansing with scalp care.
The Hair Renew Daily Active Serum or Hair Renew Scalp Oil can also be useful additions. The serum provides lightweight leave-in care for everyday use, while the oil nourishes a dry scalp more intensively.
The Detox Hair Mask cleanses the hair and scalp more deeply. The True Enlightenment Scalp Scrub, on the other hand, is a mechanical scalp scrub that loosens buildup and dead skin flakes.
This kind of scrub is not suitable for every scalp. Mechanical exfoliation is best avoided if the scalp is sensitive or irritated.
The Harmonic Treatment Oil is another option for supplementary care. This versatile oil can be used on the scalp and body, while Hair Renew Scalp Oil is specially formulated for the needs of a dry scalp.
Not every dry or itchy scalp needs an exfoliant or intensive treatment. Often, gentle cleansing and suitable moisturizing care are a good choice.
If severe itching persists, or you have pronounced flaking or an inflamed scalp, consult a dermatologist.
Innersense's styling range is extensive. Instead of first choosing between gel, foam, or cream, it helps to start with the result you want: more volume, defined curls, less frizz, or a smooth finish?
Some products work well together. Quiet Calm Curl Control can provide moisture and softness first, while I Create Hold then provides stronger hold.
Fine hair often only needs a lightweight styling product. Thick curls need more conditioning and hold, depending on the desired result.
We cover the differences between styling creams, gels, foams, and finishing products, as well as suitable combinations, in more detail in our separate Innersense Styling Guide.
Innersense uses concentrated formulas. When washing your hair in particular, using enough water and the right amount of product is important. A few adjustments can usually help distribute the product more evenly and use less.
Before applying Hairbath, the hair should be completely saturated with water. With thick or curly hair, it sometimes takes a little longer for the inner sections to get wet, too.
First, put a little Hairbath in your palms and rub it together with a little water. Then apply it to your wet scalp and massage gently.
Lathering may differ from conventional shampoos. Less lather does not automatically mean less cleansing power.
A second wash may be helpful if the hair is very dirty, produces a lot of sebum, or is regularly styled with styling products.
Instead of immediately using more shampoo, rinse the first wash thoroughly and repeat the process with a small amount if needed.
Work the conditioner into wet hair after shampooing.
For fine hair, it's usually enough to condition the lengths and ends. For thick or curly hair, it can help to distribute the product in sections and gently work it through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
Then rinse according to the directions.
Many Innersense styling products are easy to distribute through thoroughly wet hair, especially for curls and waves.
Start with a small amount and add more as needed. How much you need depends on your hair length, density, and desired hold.
The range includes products for straight, wavy, curly, and coily hair. Choosing the right formula is key. A rich conditioner that works well for thick curls may be too intense for very fine hair.
Yes, the Hairbaths cleanse without sulfates. Color Awakening is specially formulated for color-treated hair. For very dry or bleached hair, a richer conditioner may also be a good choice, depending on your hair texture.
No. Some products contain honey or beeswax. Other formulas are vegan. So be sure to check the label on each product.
Porosity describes how easily hair absorbs and releases water. It can play a role in choosing hair care products, but it is not the only factor. Hair thickness, dryness, damage, and scalp needs are usually more useful considerations when getting started than a single porosity test.
How often you wash your hair depends on your scalp, hair texture, and daily routine. Regular Hairbaths can be used as needed. Intensive treatments and pigmented specialty products should be used according to their respective directions.
Yes. For example, you can combine an Innersense Hairbath with a conditioner or styling product from another brand. The important thing is that the products work well together for your hair.
A good hair care routine often requires just a suitable Hairbath and a conditioner suited to your hair texture. Add a hair mask, supplementary scalp care, or a styling product when your hair needs it.
What matters is not the number of products, but finding the right combination.
