Werwulf by Heretic Parfum tells of the moment when the beast beneath human skin awakens. Bitter pomelo, Turkish rose, and osmanthus meet iris root, violet leaf, and the gentle warmth of vanilla. Beneath them unfold dark resins, vetiver, earthy roots, and an animalic fur accord. Warm, wild, and sensual—an animalic, sensual composition about the seductive power of transformation and those deep-rooted instincts we hardly dare to resist.
Werwulf is the second chapter in the limited-edition Werwulf collection from Heretic Parfum, Robert Eggers, and Focus Features. Beneath the full moon, what people keep deeply hidden within themselves emerges: instinct, bodily warmth, and an untamed, animalistic nature.
- Top notes: Bitter pomelo, Turkish rose, osmanthus
- Heart notes: Iris root, violet leaf, vanilla bean
- Base notes: Labdanum, vetiver, benzoin, animalic fur accord
Werwulf opens with the tart fruitiness of pomelo, accompanied by Turkish rose and osmanthus. The floral notes lend the composition a soft, sensual side, while the bitter citrus creates a tense, slightly sharp opening. In Heretic's fragrance story, wormwood and cardamom also stand out: cool, bitter-aromatic herbs and a warm spice note that evokes breath against winter-cold skin.
At the heart, the fragrance grows softer, darker, and more intimate. Iris root and violet leaf blend powdery, earthy, and green facets, while vanilla adds understated warmth. Resinous notes of elemi and fir balsam, alongside hints of smoke and leather, take it in a more sensual direction. The floral and gentle notes remain noticeable as something rough and untamed develops beneath them.
At the base, Werwulf reveals its true character. Labdanum and benzoin bring dark, balsamic warmth, while vetiver adds a dry, rooty earthiness. An animalic fur accord joins them, evoking warm skin, damp leather, and dense fur. Patchouli, moss, and soft musky facets deepen this impression. The composition feels close to the skin and alive, with a rough, instinctive side that holds its own beneath the smoother notes.
What fascinates about Werwulf is the combination of animalic wildness and unexpected softness. Rose, iris, and vanilla sit alongside earthy roots, leather, resins, and the impression of damp fur. Douglas Little wanted to create a fragrance that makes humanity's primal nature tangible. Werwulf is warm, sensual, and unsettling all at once – a perfume in which the familiar and the unfamiliar meet in an unusual way.
The Beast Beneath the Skin
Wer – man. Wulf – wolf. The name itself describes the two natures between which this fragrance moves. In Robert Eggers' dark 13th-century world, the werewolf is more than a fearsome creature. It embodies the idea that something wild lies hidden beneath the human form, something that cannot be controlled forever.
It is a full moon. Bitter herbs cut through the cold winter air. Wormwood recalls ancient incantations against the darkness, while cardamom brings in an initial bodily warmth, like breath on cold skin. Elemi releases the sharp, resinous note of injured fir bark. But deeper in the forest, something begins to change. Smoke and leather settle on the skin, and the familiar human scent gives way to a darker, wilder warmth.
Animalic costus and castoreum nuances conjure up the scent of fur, skin, and body heat. Fir balsam and labdanum intensify the atmosphere, while patchouli, vetiver, moss, and damp earth reveal their dark, earthy depth. Soft musk notes linger like the trail of an animal in the cold winter air.
For perfumer Douglas Little, Werwulf was the most challenging composition of the three fragrances. He was particularly focused on how to evoke the awakening of a beast through the scent of warm skin and damp fur. Costus root, with its distinctive scent profile reminiscent of wet animal fur, gave him the initial inspiration. Since the raw material in question can no longer be used in perfumes, Little developed the idea of creating his own animalic accord.
He wanted to capture the wildness of a werewolf without resorting to the obvious idea of sweat and unpleasant body odor. Instead, he worked with warmth, roots, resins, musk, and the impression of fur. The softer, floral, and powdery fragrance notes are also part of this concept: the human is still recognizable, even as the animal takes control.
Old stories tell of warriors who wore wolf pelts and roamed the forests as beasts. Werwulf draws on this archaic idea. The human does not suddenly disappear. His scent changes, his instincts take over, and something long hidden rises to the surface. The forest takes possession of his body. Beneath the skin, the wolf awakens.
The three witnesses
Following their collaboration on Nosferatu, Heretic Parfum, director Robert Eggers, and Focus Features have created another extraordinary fragrance collection. This time, it accompanies Eggers' horror film Werwulf, set in 13th-century England and opening in US theaters on December 25, 2026.
For nearly two years, Heretic founder and perfumer Douglas Little immersed himself in the world of the film. Ancient myths, medieval language, historical research, and creative exchanges with Robert Eggers all informed the development.
The result is three fragrances that embody different witnesses to a bestial transformation. Each preserves a different moment in the story that unfolds beneath the changing moon. Together, they tell of the thin boundary between civilization and instinct, human and animal, memory and myth.
The three witnesses. The forest. The beast. The blood.
Þe Wode Hath Teth – The forest. As the moon waxes, the story begins. Smoke, ash, resins, frozen earth, and dark woods evoke a wild, merciless forest where something begins to stir.
Werwulf – The beast. Under the full moon, the beast awakens. Animalic musk notes, skin, resins, roots, and the impression of damp fur tell of the moment when the boundary between human and animal disappears.
Blodwode – The memory. As the moon wanes, the traces remain. Metallic, animalic, and resinous notes tell of what has happened. The forest has witnessed everything—and forgets nothing.
Who is Werwulf for?
Werwulf is a special choice for anyone who appreciates animalic, earthy, and balsamic niche perfumes. Those who love warm musk notes, leather, dark resins, and vetiver will find an exceptionally distinctive fragrance here. Iris, violet leaf, rose, and vanilla also lend it a softer, slightly powdery side, creating an appealing contrast with the animalic base.
The comparison with Þe Wode Hath Teth is particularly intriguing: while the first fragrance evokes a cold, smoky, and dangerous forest, Werwulf comes right up close to the skin. Its warmth, earthy resins, and unusual fur accord tell of the creature that transforms in this forest.
Heretic Parfum
Heretic Parfum creates unconventional, gender-independent fragrances with a botanical signature. Founder and perfumer Douglas Little combines botanical raw materials with selected modern fragrance molecules. His compositions are often inspired by rituals, unusual encounters with nature, and the darker sides of the human imagination.
Werwulf consists of 97% ingredients of natural origin and is based on organic sugarcane alcohol. The fragrance is vegan and cruelty-free. The animalic fur and musk facets are created without animal-derived fragrance ingredients.
